(Why Accept It. Jan. 2002)
-Just because it is, doesn't mean that it's right- A thought inspired by watching the movie "Men of Honor."
We all live in our own perception of reality, what's good or perfect... our personal views to what's good for
us, and what is not. And, we need to question, "How do we know the difference?" Watching the
movie "Men of Honor," disgust formed within my mind for what I was viewing. Yes the movie is inspirational, but
realizing both sides, I became disgusted with what I was experiencing. What I experienced was a Hollywood film that involved
racism. The racism just wasn't from any average "Joe" though. The racism existed within the United States Military.
I was sick because of that thought. Watching this show with my brother and sister-in-law, I could no longer hold in my thoughts.
As the black man was called, "Cookie" by his leading commander and looked down upon by other higher
officials and comrades, I said out-loud, "And those are the men who fought for my freedom." The tone of
voice I used assured my brother and sister-in-law that I was disgusted with a unit of peace (The U.S. Military) attacking
its own men like that with racial, bias, and prejudicial views. My brother and sister-in-law both told me
in my confusion, "That's the way it was in those days." Okay... I think to myself now. That was the way
it was in those days, but that still doesn't make it right. Why should I just accept the past for what it was? Just because
something is set in stone... be it a religion, a historical document, or even a modern day thought doesn't mean that it's
right damn it! Even now we live in a time where we can better ourselves, but so many people have that thought, "Well,
that's just the way it is." In my mind, that still doesn't make it right. Just because it is the way it is, does
not mean that it's good for you/us. I'm sure most of you know this, but why just accept it like many have done for years/decades/centuries?
This includes the history before recorded time, the present, and most importantly, your future. I hope you all look outside
your windows and question, "Is this the best the world can do?" If it's not, then I hope you teach humanity
how to better itself!
